Federal Manager's Daily Report

The Federal CIO Council has released guidance for the federal government’s transition to a new Internet protocol with a greater networking capacity that will eventually be needed, and for which the Office of Management and Budget has established a June 30, 2008 deadline.

By that time, agency network backbones should support both the current IPv4 and the new IPv6, but more pressingly, by June 30, 2006, agencies have been asked for a complete inventory of Internet-protocol aware applications and peripherals that are dependent on a network backbone, as well as a complete IPv6 transition impact analysis.

February 2006 was the deadline for developing a network backbone transition plan.

According to the guidance — designed to inform transition planning — agencies will develop individual solutions under a broad, “one enterprise” approach.
