The IRS has told employees that potential furloughs of five to seven days would not take place until after filing season and that it would continue operating under a hiring freeze and look to cut costs in areas such as travel, training, facilities and support.
The National Treasury Employees Union said it would bargain with the IRS over any furlough days – expected to be one per pay period – and cost saving measures that might avoid them. "We have had informal discussions with the agency about this matter and we will engage in bargaining when the formal notice of furlough is provided," said NTEU president Colleen Kelley.
