Federal Manager's Daily Report

GSA is getting closer to setting up a government-wide mobile device management program, or MDM, as part of the government’s wider digital government strategy, OMB’s CIO has said.

Steven VanRoekel said in a recent post that the program would attempt to identify existing solutions and contract vehicles to enable agencies to acquire and secure devices, authenticate users, deploy apps and access data.

He noted that because MDM solutions and their adoption by agencies are at an early stage there is an opportunity to shape the nascent government mobile space and promote coordinated purchasing.

GSA has been working with government and industry partners to identify current and potential MDM requirements, and will use the results of a request for technical capabilities that it posted on FedBizOpps to get a picture of existing solutions that VanRoekel says can help agencies with market research so that they buy capabilities that match their strategy on mobile platforms.
