Bipartisan legislation (HR-8756) newly offered in the House would establish a chief AI officer position at every agency to oversee its efforts and policies regarding AI, and also create a Chief Artificial Intelligence Officers Council to coordinate the use of AI across the government.

The bill “will help ensure the federal government is prepared to utilize artificial intelligence safely and effectively,” sponsors said in a statement. It further “will inject structure and accountability into the government’s management of AI and will ensure that every agency has the leadership in place to oversee the deployment of AI technology in safe and efficient ways.”

The measure also would:

* create artificial intelligence coordination boards of senior officials at each agency to coordinate and integrate AI activities and policy across the agency; and

* instruct every agency to develop an AI strategy and requires the head of every agency to be accountable for ensuring the responsible research, development, acquisition, and use of AI.
