Federal Manager's Daily Report

A simple "thank you” could mean more to employees than performance awards or other forms of recognition for a job well done, the Merit Systems Protection Board has said in recommending that managers get into the habit of providing spontaneous and immediate recognition.

It noted that when asked in a recent MSPB survey, which rewards were personally most important in seeking out and continuing employment with their organization, 84 percent of federal employees chose "being appreciated,” more than those choosing "opportunity for advancement” or "awards and bonuses.”

MSPB said this kind of recognition should be tied to specific behaviors and delivered right away.
