The Government Printing Office’s name has been changed to the Government Publishing Office, a reflection of the changing mission of the agency, first established by Abraham Lincoln.
The change was included in the wrapup budget measure for the remainder of the current fiscal year, reflecting the increasing concentration on digital formats through the Federal Digital System, apps, eBooks, and related technologies in addition to traditional print publishing.
“This is a historic day for GPO. Publishing defines a broad range of services that includes print, digital, and future technological advancements. The name Government Publishing Office better reflects the services that GPO currently provides and will provide in the future,” said Davita Vance-Cooks, GPO director.
The GPO produces and distributes information products and services for all three branches of the government in digital and print formats, provides information to the public for free through the Federal Digital System and partners with 1,200 libraries through the Federal Depository Library Program.
