The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has announced a
major reorganization following a report issued by a presidential
commission on space policy that said it needs a more integrated
approach to systems development and exploration, according to an
agency statement.
It said the transformation — effective August 1 — fundamentally
restructures NASA’s strategic enterprises into mission directorates.
That would entail the transformation from NASA functional offices
to support offices and the alignment of headquarters and field offices.
The statement said NASA is creating a strategic planning council,
a director of advanced planning and a chief operating officer council,
and that it would redefine its relationship with field centers by
developing lines of responsibility and accountability.
“This transformation will be an evolutionary process, exploring new
ways to move forward and implement change. We’ll also be engaging
other government agencies, industry, academia and the international
community to assist us in developing the tools and processes we need
to successfully advance the Vision for Space Exploration,” said NASA
administrator Sean O’Keefe.
