Even though the subject matter it handles is often highly technical, NASA ranked number one in a rating of federal agencies for clarity of communications, followed by HHS and Treasury.
The rankings by the Grammerlyblog, one of several organizations that monitor agency compliance with the 2010 Plain Writing Act, gave runner-up honors to State, the Intelligence Community, Transportation, Justice, Labor, Commerce and SSA.
The most common mistakes include: long sentences, even if grammatically correct; use of passive voice, where the subject is the recipient of the action rather than takes the action; sentence fragments; ambiguous use of adjectives or adverbs; overuse of conjunctions that can cause run-on sentences; and redundant prepositions and phrases, among others.
