By: FEDweek StaffAmong legislation recently introduced in Congress is a bill (HR-2689) to require a series of customer service improvements by federal agencies, mainly through enhanced online services.
These would include requiring: the IRS to expand electronic tax filing; the State Department to set up an online passport renewal office; the Education Department to create a centralized loan repayment portal; the SBA to streamline online disaster applications; and the SSA to enhance mobile processes for applying for or receiving benefits.
Also recently introduced were:
* S-1137, to create a DHS law enforcement mental health and resiliency program and require DHS components to prioritize mental health, well-being, resilience, and suicide prevention programs; and
* S-1253, to increase the numbers Customs and Border Protection officers and support staff and to require reports that identify staffing, infrastructure, and equipment needed to enhance security at ports of entry.
