The White House has nominated the current director of
the Secret Service, W. Ralph Basham, to serve as the
new Commissioner of the Bureau of Customs and Border
Protection.
Basham, who previously served as chief of staff of the
Transportation Security Administration, and before that,
as director of the Department of Treasury’s Federal Law
Enforcement Training Center, faces Senate confirmation.
Replacing Basham as Secret Service director is Mark
Sullivan, currently the service’s assistant director
for the Office of Protective Operations.
Bashman is a 28-year veteran of the Secret Service, and
Sullivan a 23-year veteran.
“Ralph’s extensive law enforcement career, his work
internationally and within several components of the
department make him a superb fit to lead CBP’s vital
mission,” said Department of Homeland Security secretary
Michael Chertoff.
“Both men are vastly experienced and highly-decorated
members of the federal law enforcement community, who
have each made significant contributions to our nation’s
security,” he said.
