The top honor of employee of the year went to a National Institutes of Health deputy hospital epidemiologist, a senior investigator and their team in Bethesda, Md.
The team of doctors led by epidemiologist Julie Segre and investigator Tara Palmore, had been given the daunting task of stopping the spread of deadly hospital-acquired infection, and they managed to do so through genome sequencing.
They sequenced the DNA of the antibiotic-resistant bacteria, allowing them to "detect the origins of the infections, trace the transmission path and implement robust measures to put an end to the outbreak," PPS said, adding that they managed to create "a groundbreaking model for the health care industry" in the process.
