The head of the Energy Department’s National Nuclear Security Administration has announced plans to leave federal service.
NNSA administrator Thomas D’Agostino was at the agency’s helm for over five years and said the decision to leave was partly based on his belief that organizations benefit from periodic changes in leadership and that the timing was right with President Obama’s first term ending. D’Agostino has also been serving as the under secretary for nuclear security, the deputy administrator for defense programs and in the Environmental Management Organization and the Office of Legacy Management.
Neile Miller will take over as acting administrator and under secretary for nuclear security.
Energy secretary Steven Chu commended D’Agostino for 36 years of service, including with the Navy, and commended him for “leading a vast acceleration of the department’s efforts to reduce nuclear dangers” such as by helping to reduce the nation’s nuclear arsenal by 85 percent and working to safeguard the remaining stockpile.
