OMB has issued a directive setting standards that require agencies and units within agencies involved in the production of statistics to: produce and disseminate relevant-and timely information; conduct credible, accurate, and objective statistical activities; and protect the trust of information providers by ensuring the confidentiality and exclusive statistical use oftheir responses. Separately, OMB ordered departments and agencies that host a federal statistical agency or unit to report on actions they currently take, are in the process of taking, or are considering, to support those goals. “Identifying best practices will help to nurture and maintain the continued achievement of these responsibilities across the Federal statistical system,” OMB said in a recent memo ordering a report within four months.
