OPM is eliminating 21 job classification series for occupations that the government has relatively few employees and the work can be reclassified to other series.
The move is effectively a description of skills for which the government no longer has much need – each has 25 or fewer incumbents – either because the work has been contracted out or because it has become obsolete.
The list, generated by a routine review of job classifications, was pared down from the original proposal to cancel 37 series, based on comments received. Occupational series that were spared include those for language clerical, music, theater and art specialists, and bartending.
The memo announcing the final decision instructs agencies how to reclassify employees in the canceled occupational series, which must be completed by next March.
