Federal Manager's Daily Report

OPM recently reported that the percentage of new federal hirees who are veterans reached the highest level in 20 years in 2011, an increase it attributed to the administration’s veterans employment initiative, which was in its first full year of operation that year.

OPM said the government hired about 230,000 new employees in fiscal year, below the 282,000 of the prior year. Of those hired, about 65,000 were veterans, or 28.3 percent—up by 4.3 points over the 2009 figure OPM uses as a baseline for assessing the hiring initiative, and up by 2.7 points over 2010.

In 2011, about 567,000 of the 2,079,000 federal employees in the count had veterans status, or 27.3 percent. That’s up from 25.8 percent in the 2009 baseline year.
