Federal Manager's Daily Report

The Senate has confirmed President Obama’s pick to lead OPM, John Berry, formerly the director of the National Zoo.

The American Federation of Government Employees has praised Berry for his work on federal workforce issues as legislative director for Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md. from 1985 to 1994.

He will now be charged with improving federal recruitment strategies and expediting the hiring process, administering the federal retirement system and various benefits programs.

He told the Senate federal workforce subcommittee at a recent confirmation hearing that he would work to create a partnership with federal labor organizations and agency management, and he pledged to devote attention to improve the federal security clearance process.

OPM credited him with resolving management issues at the National Zoo through the implementation of a strategic plan and 20-year capital master plan.
