Veterans represented 19.1 percent of all new hires in
fiscal 2004 and 33.6 percent of all full-time permanent
new hires, according to the Office of Personnel
Management’s fiscal 2004 report on veteran employment.
It said that as of September 30, 2004, the federal
government employed 453,725 veterans, an increase of
4,716 from the 449,009 employed during fiscal 2003.
The federal government employees more than twice the
percentage of vets than the civilian labor force,
three times the percentage of Vietnam-era veterans,
more than six times the percentage of disabled
veterans and over seven times the percentage of
30-percent or more disabled veterans, according to
OPM.
It said that for 2004, the number of 30-percent or more
disabled veterans increased to 42,010 from 35,901 the
prior year.
