OPM has opened a new central portal for internship and recent graduate internship-type opportunities, the latest in a series of steps to invigorate such programs as a pipeline for future permanent hiring.
“The federal government recognize that the next generation is eager to make its mark, and there’s no better place to make an impact than the federal government,” said an OPM announcement on intern.usajobs.gov.
After its first week in operation the site had about 150 postings, which can be sorted by agency and salary level—the latter of which, rather optimistically, goes up to $500,000.
In a joint memo with OMB in January, OPM told agencies to increase their use of internships, fellowships, apprenticeships, and other student and early career programs while increasing the share of those that are paid versus unpaid; to better coordinate and fund such programs; and to hold senior officials “accountable to using these programs to build an inclusive and diverse federal workforce talent pipeline.”
