OPM has released retirement data for fiscal 2004 showing an increase in retirements as well as years of service, and has projected that about 290,000 full-time federal employees will retire through 2010, or about 18 percent of the 1.57 million non-seasonal workforce base.

The average total number of retirements over the last ten years was 52,124, with an average age of 58 with 26.3 years of service.

In fiscal 2004 there were 55,848 retirements at 58.7 years with 25.1 years of service, and an average salary of $73,220.

The average number of voluntary retirements over each of the last ten years was 33,930 with an average age of 60.9 with 27.5 years of service, while the number of voluntary retirements in fiscal 2004 was 42,356, with an average age of 60.4 with 29.3 years of service.

Army had the most total retirements in fiscal 2004 at 8,971, followed by Navy at 7,091, Veterans Affairs at 6,262, the Air Force at 4,641, Treasury at 4,396 and Agriculture at 2,930.
