
OPM has touted assistance it has provided to agencies for boosting AI-related skills in their workforces under the 2020 AI in Government Act and a 2023 executive order.
The AI “talent surge” under the order has resulted in the placement of some 250 AI specialists government-wide over the last year, with the AI and Tech Talent Task Force created the order continuing to coordinate initiatives to facilitate hiring, it said. A separate group, the Tech to Gov interagency working group, meanwhile plans two more virtual job fairs in the current fiscal year, after one in October “garnered the most interest of any prior Tech to Gov event.”
OPM also cited actions including allowing agencies to use direct hire and temporary hire authorities; issuance of a competency model to help agencies identify the skills they need and guidance on classifying such positions; and guidance on using pay incentives and flexibilities for such positions.
It also noted guidance it issued to the workforce in general on “responsible use” of generative AI; and 14 training sessions it held, attended by more than 18,000 employees, on fundamentals of AI.
