Federal Manager's Daily Report

OPM’s numbers on retirement indicate that just over one-fourth of the federal workforce could be eligible to retire, according to the report.

It said that just over 192,000 federal employees were eligible to retire in fiscal 2004, and 303,000 were eligible for early-out retirements.

However, employees on average work about three years beyond their eligibility date — with men working for 3.1 years and women working 2.7 years longer on average — and there were 55,848 retirements in fiscal 2004 at an average age of 58.7, a number that has been slowly inching up in recent years, OPM said.
