Federal Manager's Daily Report

The Natural Resource Stewardship and Science Directorate in the National Park Service is a well regarded resource for providing independent and credible scientific information but faces certain management challenges along with environmental challenges, according to a National Academy of Public Administration study.

NAPA said the directorate has made progress in core functions including assisting park managers in understanding natural resources; evaluating the conditions of those resources; integrating that information into decision making; conservation; and responding to emergencies.

NAPA added that parks face challenges ranging from melting of glaciers to insect infestations, and that the directorate needs to continue to develop networks and partnerships to help NPS better respond to those challenges. In addition, the directorate should increase its presence in the field and in Washington, D.C. and should develop a workforce planning process to meet the recruitment, retention and training needs resulting from the projected significant retirements of NRSS employees, especially at higher grade levels, the report said.
