A new poll by Pew Research found that the public has an overall favorable view of 13 of the 16 agencies mentioned, ranging from a net 69 percent favorable for the National Park Service to a net 12 percent negative for the IRS.
Behind the NPS (76 percent favorable vs. 7 percent unfavorable), NASA had the highest net favorable rating, 55 (67-12); the Postal Service had the second highest percentage of favorable views, 72, but more negative views, 21 percent. Views of the IRS were 50 percent negative vs. 38 percent positive, while Education and Justice were the only others with net negative views, -1 percent in each case.
Those findings were consistent with prior reports but direct comparisons can’t be made because the questions in the poll of some 9,400 persons differed slightly from the past, it said.
Also consistent with the past were partisan differences, with Republicans or Republican-leaning respondents negative overall toward each agency except the NPS, VA, USPS, SSA and NASA. Democrats overall were favorable toward all agencies, with the highest negatives at the IRS, Justice and DHS.
“Most of these partisan gaps are similar to those seen last year, but Republicans and Democrats have grown further apart in their opinions of the Department of Justice. Republicans’ evaluations of the department have turned more negative,” it said.
Unfavorable views by Republicans of the CDC also have increased in recent years, it said, which “appear to reflect a shift related to the coronavirus pandemic.”
