The annual Public Service Recognition Week will be May 6-12 this year, a week to honor work of employees at the federal, state and local government levels sponsored by the Public Employees Roundtable, a coalition of organizations.

“Throughout the country, mayors, governors, agency leaders, communities and public service organizations participate in PSRW by issuing proclamations; hosting award ceremonies and special tribute events; and delivering messages about the value of public service. We encourage government leaders and public servants from all backgrounds to participate by showing appreciation to their employees and colleagues and by sharing stories of excellence in public service,” says the publicservicerecognitionweek.org site.

That site has resources including suggestions for public outreach to schools or civic groups about the work of government employees, organizing community events, publicity through local newspapers and radio stations, and others.

Among the major events for federal employees is the awarding of the Samuel J. Hyman Service to America Medals, or “Sammies.” Agencies also are encouraged to use the week as a time to honor employee achievements and volunteer activities with appreciation events, awards ceremonies and similar activities.
