Leaders of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee have announced they are working on legislation to extend the expiration date for the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction — slated for termination in October 2007 in the recently enacted defense authorization bill.

The SIGIR has found problems including lack of accountability for money distributed to Iraq ministries, inadequate tracking of weapons distributed to Iraqi forces, wasteful spending on infrastructure projects, misclassification of data and other problems.
