SSA has said it will be able to restore half of the public service hours it cut in recent years due to budget restrictions, having received a boost of about $100 million in its administrative budget of $1.8 billion for the current fiscal year.
SSA offices have been open to the public 27 hours a week since 2013, down from 35 hours before 2011. Because of the improved funding, SSA will extend those hours by one hour a day on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
Offices will remain closed on Wednesday afternoons.
The agency has been criticized for the reduction in service, including in an IG report issued last August, but has said the decision to cut back was simply budget-driven.
