Responses in certain areas on OPM’s 2013 Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey suggest innovation among federal employees is in decline, according to an analysis by the Partnership for Public Service, Deloitte and Hay Group.
From 2012 – 2013, the government-wide innovation score dropped by 2.1 points to 59.4 out of 100, continuing a decline from 2010 when PPS began tracking the concept.
While 90 percent of feds surveyed say they continually look for better ways to do their jobs, just 54.7 percent say they are encouraged to do so, and only 33.4 percent say their agencies reward creativity and innovation.
“The bottom line is that federal workers are motivated to improve the way they do their work, but they do not feel supported by their organizations,” according to PPS.
“The downward government-wide trend and the negative employee views on some key workplace indicators are troubling signs for sustaining a government that is able to innovate to meet new challenges,” it concluded.
