The partial results of this year’s Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey released by OPM again show a consistent pattern of higher satisfaction and employee engagement at smaller agencies as compared with medium and large ones.

For example, while the government-wide employee engagement score stayed level from 2021 at 71 percent positive, the score was 70 in very large agencies (more than 75,000 employees), 72 in large agencies (10,000-75,000), 72 in medium agencies (1,000-10,000), and 76 in both small (100-1000) and very small (fewer than 100) agencies.

That pattern also held up across the elements of that index, in which views of senior leaders ranged from 59 to 67 percent positive as agencies decreased in size, views of immediate supervisors from 79 to 84, and of the intrinsic work experience from 72 to 79.

In the global satisfaction index, which fell by two points to 62 percent positive overall, the figures ranged from 61 percent positive for the largest agencies to 68 for the smallest. A new “performance confidence” index similarly ranged from 83 to 90 by decreasing size, while a new DEIA index ranged from 69 to 76.

Unlike in past years, the OPM data release on the FEVS did not include a such a breakdown by agency nor an analysis of the results. A fuller report is expected before year’s end.
