By: FEDweek StaffPresident Trump has issued an executive order to consolidate federal wildland firefighting efforts currently split between the Agriculture Department and the Interior Department into a new Federal Wildland Fire Service in the latter.
The action follows a statement in a preliminary budget proposal of that intent, which it said would “streamline federal wildfire suppression response, risk mitigation efforts, and coordination with non-federal partners to combat the wildfire crisis.”
The order calls on the two departments to act within 90 days to “achieve the most efficient and effective use of wildland fire offices, coordinating bodies, programs, budgets, procurement processes, and research and, as necessary, recommend additional measures to advance this objective.”
The order also tells those departments to consider “innovative uses of woody biomass and forest products to reduce fuel loads in areas at risk of wildfires” and issuing rules to reduce the risk of fires starting near high-voltage power lines, while telling DoD to examine whether it can “prioritize the sale of excess aircraft and aircraft parts to support wildfire mitigation and response.”
Further, all agencies are to “identify, declassify, and make publicly available historical satellite datasets” in their possession that can be used for wildfire prevention and response.
