TSA officers will receive “back to basics” training in light of a recent IG report disclosing security vulnerabilities, its parent department DHS has said, with all front-line and supervisory personnel to receive that training by the end of September.
The training will focus on the vulnerabilities identified in the IG tests and follows briefings of security directors at every airport on those issues.
Other steps, DHS has said, include increasing in manual screening methods such as hand-held metal detectors, increased use of random explosive trace detectors, and re-evaluation of certain screening equipment.
Longer-term, DHS said it is re-evaluating performance standards for screening equipment, the practice by which certain travelers are allowed to use expedited screening along with members of TSA Pre-Check, and standard operating procedures. The latter could involve greater use of supervisors to help resolve situations at screening checkpoints.
