Federal Manager's Daily Report

The National Treasury Employees Union is again calling on Congress to extend law enforcement officer status — and the special retirement benefits that go with it — to some 17,000 Customs and Border Protection employees.

It cited a recent GAO report surveying LEOs in the federal government, saying CBP employees fit GAO’s criteria: individuals who are authorized as part of their work to perform any of four specific law enforcement functions including conducting criminal investigations, executing search warrants, making arrests or carrying firearms.

NTEU, which represents about 15,000 CBP employees, argues that CBP officers are entitled to the right to retire at age 50 with 20 years of federal service and that it would continue to support legislation that would provide those benefits.
