Federal Manager's Daily Report

Houston led the nation in the Postal Service’s annual nationwide dog attack city rankings, in a year in which 5,581 postal employees were attacked. Like Houston, Los Angeles, Cleveland and San Diego all had well over 50 attacks last year.

USPS participated at a recent event to kick off Dog Bite Prevention week in Washington, D.C.and it tries to raise awareness among dog owners on how to minimize attacks. For example, it asks dog owners to put pets in another room when answering the door – lest a dog burst through a screen door and attack. It also warned that handing mail to a child in the presence of a family dog could provoke an attack.

The Postal Servicealso warned dog owners that they could be asked to pick up their mail at the post office until a carrier is assured that a problematic pet has been restrained, and if a dog is roaming a neighborhood, all households in that neighborhood could be asked to pick up their mail.
