Federal Manager's Daily Report

The Postal Service has decreased greenhouse gas emissions from its fiscal 2008 baseline by 7.4 percent, equal to removing about 200,000 passenger vehicles from the road each year, USPS has said in its 2011 annual sustainability report.

According to the report, the USPS is using energy audits to reduce energy consumption. For example it is using a Utility Management System and Enterprise Energy Management System to help it reduce energy consumption by 30 percent by 2015.

So far, USPS credits energy management practices with helping it reduce energy use by 8.6 trillion Btus from the 2008 baseline, over 25 percent, equal to the average energy use of about 90,000 US households.

USPS also says it’s using less energy by consolidating data centers, using alternative fuel vehicles, adapting mail routes including by driving to neighborhoods then continuing on by foot to deliver mail and by delivering more mail on foot overall and by bike.
