The Postal Service nearly met its goals for hiring new employees and converting temporary employees to permanent status for the 2022 pea mailing season, an inspector general audit has said.
“The Postal Service made great strides to achieve hiring targets throughout the year, and management adjusted their conversion and hiring goals based on operational needs,” it said.
It said the USPS fell just 4 percent short of its goal to hire and train 28,200 seasonal employees, while converting to career status some 8,100 temporary processing employees and more than 4,300 temporary delivery employees. While the 8,100 figure was below the goal of 10,000, a decrease of 10 percent in total mail volume from the year before softened the impact of that shortfall, it said.
Another result was that compared with the prior year work-hours decreased by 9.2 million hours, 4.25 percent, and overtime was reduced by 3.2 million hours, 8.8 percent.
