The White House has cited steps under the “digital first” initiative it started last year, saying that “most of the public interacts with their government digitally by default – and they expect their online experience to be consistent with their favorite consumer website and mobile app.”

A posting says that agencies have inventoried more than 10,000 public-facing websites and identified their top websites with the most user traffic. “Through ongoing and upcoming actions, agencies will identify opportunities to improve content for the most common questions and to deliver digital self-service options,” it says.

Agencies have named digital experience delivery lead personnel – and a recently formed Digital Experience Council brings together “cross-functional stakeholders from across government to bring a coordinated approach to digital experience delivery,” it says.

The posting also points to steps by individual agencies including:

* An assessment by the IRS of user search behavior and information on its most visited websites “which informed the creation and revision of content targeted toward first-time tax filers for the 2024 filing season”; new features in its online accounts; and the pilot Direct File program.

* Consolidation and redesign of NASA’s websites, “resulting in a more consistent look and feel within and across the sites.”

* A redesign of FEMA’s home page, including addition of a feature that makes it easier for users to access the most popular topics direct from the homepage.

* An upcoming relaunch of the CDC home page and a rewrite of key content “so that it is accessible and better meets users’ needs.”
