The White House has issued a statement in response
to the House’s postal reform bill, saying it would
likely veto a bill shifting the military
service-funding obligation back to the Department
of Treasury – it would show up in the deficit – or
releasing $73 billion in funds held escrow to USPS
“without devoting them to pre-fund liabilities.”
The White House is reportedly considering a compromise
that would allow USPS to put the $27 billion it has
paid for military pensions thus far toward retiree
health benefits, as well as make military pension
payments at a later date — and to make available $4
billion in loans over the next two years in place of
freeing up the escrow account. The bill now moves to
the Senate.
