Finalists have been announced for the annual Service to America Medals, or Sammies, a top honor for federal employees sponsored by the Partnership for Public Service.
“This year’s honorees are recognized for their efforts to assist after disasters such as the Maui wildfires and the collapse of an I-95 bridge in Philadelphia; to revolutionize the way the federal government uses new technologies to work and serve the public more effectively; to transform how patients access drugs and medical information; to protect America’s standing and interests around the world; to promote a cleaner environment and invest in American communities; to hold bad actors accountable for harms to the public; and much more,” the Partnership said.
The 25 finalists, including 10 teams of two or three, are in the categories of emerging leaders; science, technology and environment; safety, security and international affairs; and management excellence.
Among them are finalists for the Paul A. Volcker career achievement medal: Francine E. Alkisswani, Ph.D., of the Commerce Department for advocating for and implementing a program “to promote historically Black colleges and universities as innovation hubs that bridge the digital divide for underserved communities”; Janet Woodcock of the FDA, for transforming the agency’s drug review process “to expand access to generic medicines and promising medications to treat severe, life-threatening diseases”; and Christopher Mark of MSHA for work on “preventing fatalities from roof falls and other underground mining disasters, saving countless lives.”
Also: Robert J. McGauhey of the Forest Service for developing software that “converts voluminous aerial data into detailed information that enables better management of forestlands”; and Thaddeus A. Ryba, Jr. of the Air Force for his role in “negotiations that led to the elimination of chemical weapons in Syria and Libya, contributed to the final destruction of the U.S. chemical weapons stockpile and enabled the banning of deadly nerve agents.”
Finalists are also eligible for the People’s Choice award, which will be announced during the summer after public voting. Winners of the category awards will be announced the fall.
