The sponsor of legislation in the previous Congress to create up to six weeks of paid parental leave for federal employees says she will introduce the proposal again soon despite the Office of Personnel Management’s recent report finding that agency personnel directors don’t believe such a benefit would be a significant recruiting and retention tool. Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., asserted that “if OPM would have taken the time to survey employees of the federal work force, I think the conclusion would be much different.” She said that offering paid leave time-versus the unpaid time that parents currently are entitled to-would make the federal workplace more family-friendly.
