The Army has released data on its civilian workforce that puts details into many aspects of the overall aging of the federal workforce and the pending rise in retirement eligibility. Compared with 1989, the first year for which data were presented, the percentage of the workforce age 55 and older has risen from 17 to 27 percent, while 61 percent of the workforce is at least age 45 now, compared with 43 percent then. Overall, Army employees average 13.4 years of federal service, average 47 years old and retire on average at age 60 ½.
