A measure to bar the round of base closings recently approved by President Bush is pending in the House, although prospects for stopping the process appear poor. The House Armed Services Committee voted against the resolution to block the closings, but under procedures set up by the law creating the closing process, opponents of the closings could demand a floor vote regardless of the committee’s position. An attempt to block the closings might arise in the Senate in the context of an amendment to a DoD spending bill.
