OPM has finalized a policy in effect on an interim basis since 2002 making senior level and senior scientific and professional career employees eligible for presidential rank awards similar to those available to SES members. Under the final rules in the August 8 Federal Register, those employees are eligible for the Distinguished Senior Professional award for sustained extraordinary accomplishment and the Meritorious Senior Professional for sustained accomplishment. Individuals must be nominated by their agencies and there are limits on how many of each type of award may be granted.
