The Bank of America has announced that computer data tapes containing federal charge card program customer and account information have been lost, leaving those accounts potentially vulnerable. The bank said there is no evidence to date that the tapes or the accounts have been misused but that it is continuing to monitor the accounts and will contact cardholders should any unusual activity be detected. At this point, the tapes are presumed to be lost, not stolen. Cardholders will not be held liable for any unauthorized use of their cards. The bank is sending letters to charge cardholders whose information may have been on the tapes; those with questions or concerns may contact a special toll-free number, (800) 493-8444.
