The first phase of the "retirement systems modernization" project that OPM has been working on for many years has gone live, involving records of some 26,000 employees whose payroll is serviced by GSA—including employees of GSA and OPM themselves. Over the next 12 months, the system will be activated for other federal payroll providers, including the postal service and employees serviced by the National Business Center and the National Finance Center, the Defense Department and other payroll providers, as well as current retirees. The project involves moving records from paper to electronic format with the goal of improving accuracy and timeliness of benefits calculations and providing new services to employees and retirees through a new "RetireEZ" service.
