Although the open season for the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program expired December 31, applications received by the company sponsoring the insurance by January 31 (not postmarked by that date) still will be considered as if filed during the open season. The intent is to give individuals who requested information late in the open season an opportunity to review the materials and decide if they want to apply for the coverage. Although eligible persons can apply at any time, active employees and their spouses applying by the end of January would be able to retain the advantage of undergoing only abbreviated underwriting requirements. Otherwise, abbreviated underwriting now applies only to newly hired employees and their spouses within 60 days of the hiring.
