The Government Accountability Office has reviewed the government’s program of reimbursing employee student loans as a recruiting and retention tool, finding (in GAO-05-762) that while agencies using it believe it is effective, they have little hard data to support that conclusion. The agencies also said the program was too complicated to administer, and suggested ways to make it more attractive, including reducing the required service agreement for those who accept reimbursements.
