The military retirement system would provide a “portable 401k-like benefit” for service members who do not remain on active duty until retirement, and continue to provide a retirement package for those who do, under provisions of the House version of the 2016 defense-spending bill. Unveiling details a day before the House Armed Services Committee planned to mark up the measure, it also includes:

Continuance of commissary benefits and rejection of proposals to increase out-of-pocket housing expenses.

Improvements to programs to counter sexual assault and related crimes.

Establishment of a formulary maintained jointly by the Defense and Veterans Affairs departments, so that service members can continue to receive the medications they need without interruption.

Greater transition-assistance cooperation between DoD and VA.

Better financial literacy training for service members.
