The Senior Executive Service-the highest-level career positions to which most federal employees can aspire-is expected to see significant turnover in upcoming years, creating vacancies for employees now in the developmental pipeline to fill, according to a General Accounting Office report (GAO-03-34). It said that more than half of the 6,100 career SESers employed on October 1, 2000 will have left service within seven years from that date. The projected losses vary significantly by agency, however. GAO also found that under current trends, the percentage of white males in the SES will drop by 5 percent to 62 percent, while the percentage of white females will rise by 4 percent to 23 percent and the percentage of minorities, both male and female, will increase by 1 percent, to 15 percent.
