Among TSP participants, 13 percent in FERS and 9 percent in CSRS now have money in one or more of the program’s lifecycle funds. The funds, launched in mid-2005, create automatic-pilot investment portfolios based on expected withdrawal date—2010, 2020, 2030, 2040, and a current income fund for those already making withdrawals, or who expect to do so soon. The most popular fund among FERS investors is the 2020 fund, while among CSRS investors it’s the 2010 fund, reflecting the generally older CSRS population expecting to withdraw the money sooner. Four percent of TSP investors have all of their money in one L fund, and the L funds together hold about 8 percent of investor assets.
