The letter, from chairman Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn., also opposed the administration’s proposals to: reorganize the Federal Protective Service, which provides security at federal buildings, and reduce FPS staff, and instead recommended keeping employment at its current level; exempt Transportation Security Administration screeners from the government-wide pay increase, saying that the department has other personnel incentives it can use instead; repeal the authority enacted late last year to make Customs and Border Protection officers eligible for the special law enforcement officer retirement benefits effective in July, saying those officers perform similar functions to officers who already have that status. The letter also supported funding for increasing CBP staffing even beyond the increase requested by the White House.
