Although there is some variation, the 2002 leave year for most federal employees ends January 11, 2003. That means there is relatively little time left to schedule, and take, any annual leave subject to “use or lose” requirements. For most employees, the maximum amount of annual leave that may be carried over into a new leave year is 240 hours; special rules apply to senior executives. There is no limitation on carrying forward unused sick leave. Also, agencies may restore forfeited annual leave if the leave was forfeited because of an administrative error, “exigency of the public business,” or sickness of the employee.
